As part of the re-launching of the Sonora-United States Commission, Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño and the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, visited the Port of Guaymas to present the modernization works that position it as a key link in the commercial relationship between Sonora and the southwestern United States.
With the support of the Government of Mexico and the Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan, this infrastructure is expected to become the port of reference for Arizona and other southwestern states, thanks to its strategic position for outgoing goods to the Pacific.
Durazo emphasized that the Port of Guaymas, together with the expansion of the Guaymas and Ciudad Obregón airports, constitutes a comprehensive logistics system designed to attract foreign industries seeking alternatives to the saturation of U.S. ports. This infrastructure also promotes tourism, strengthening the region as a destination.
The modernization of the port includes 13 work fronts and an investment of 4 billion pesos, transforming it into a nearshoring center with Net Zero emissions that uses clean energy, in line with the new trends of sustainable trade.
“This project strengthens Sonora as a state of opportunities, with a commitment to the environment and energy efficiency,” said Governor Durazo.
In 2023, Mexico’s exports to Arizona exceeded US$11 billion, a figure that is expected to increase with the port’s new capacity, strengthening the binational economy and the state’s competitiveness in the global arena.
