Governor Durazo signs Memorandum of Understanding with UNAM to promote the Sonora Plan

Convinced that science and education are the foundation of development, Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Leonardo Lomelí Venegas, to establish a historic alliance that will drive scientific and technological innovation in strategic sectors such as electromobility and semiconductors, both key pillars of the Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan.

The state leader emphasized that this agreement will facilitate the establishment of research centers in Sonora, with the goal of strengthening academic training, technological innovation, and professional development, fundamental pillars of the Sonora Plan.

“Higher education institutions are key players and essential allies in the work we are carrying out through the Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan, which promotes the energy transition, economic decarbonization, and the development of human talent to face the challenges of the future economy,” he stated.

As a first step, and with the support of the University of Sonora, a specialized laboratory in Geology, Renewable Energy, and Ecology will be established, with a focus on the study of rare earth elements, which are critical for the energy transition and the development of strategic industries such as electromobility and semiconductors.

As part of this Memorandum of Understanding with UNAM, Governor Durazo led the Extraordinary Session 1.2025 of the National Council, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES).
