The goal is for Sonora to host one of the Olinia electric vehicle assembly plant: Sheinbaum

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the state of Sonora will host one of the Olinia electric vehicle assembly plants, a key project of the federal government that seeks to produce more affordable vehicles and foster innovation in automotive manufacturing.

“There are several locations, one of them is intended to be in Sonora, precisely, because what we are looking for is to produce a compact vehicle niche, which is cheaper than current commercial vehicles”, said Sheinbaum at a conference at the National Palace.

She explained that the plan contemplates smaller assembly plants, as opposed to the traditional large automated plants, to optimize transportation costs and increase the economic viability of these vehicles.

“If you manufacture in one place and transport to another, the cost of transportation increases the final price. This is why we are looking for assembly plants closer to the sales market”, she said.

Sheinbaum indicated that researchers are still working to define the exact locations of the plants. In the case of Sonora, she highlighted that the state meets the necessary niches for the project and that its specific location will be determined in conjunction with the governor.

She also emphasized that the goal is to move towards a 100% national model in the manufacture of electric vehicles, including batteries that are not currently produced in the country.

Finally, she highlighted that Sonora offers the ideal conditions to host this type of innovative projects, reinforcing its role as a strategic pole for electromobility in Mexico.
