Sonora advances negotiations with the tech giant FOXCONN; they will begin a roadmap to promote smart cities and electromobility

A significant step toward a green future and technological innovation was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño and the Taiwanese company Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (Foxconn), a global leader in technology and manufacturing. The agreement aims to develop a roadmap to promote smart cities and establish related industries.

As a follow-up to Governor Durazo Montaño’s work tour in Taiwan last January, Foxconn executives visited Sonora.

“Sonora is ready to become the center of the electric mobility revolution in Mexico and a leader in integrating the benefits of artificial intelligence into the daily lives of Sonorans. Today, we are reaping the benefits of the Sonora Plan and our Development with Security model. This agreement with Foxconn not only puts us on the path to positioning the state at the forefront of research, innovation, and technological development, but it will also contribute to building a prosperous and sustainable future for Mexican families,” stated Governor Durazo Montaño.

The governor announced that the collaboration with Foxconn will involve authorities, academics, and Mexican entrepreneurs, as well as specialists and students.

“We have a win-win plan. Thanks to three years of work through the Sonora Plan, we are now forming this collaboration with the world’s largest technology company to explore the possibility of developing an entire next-generation industrial ecosystem,” he added.

The agreement signed by both parties establishes that, through the Sonora Plan, Foxconn will assess the installation of an industrial ecosystem. “Based on the Olinia project promoted by our President, Claudia Sheinbaum, we have invited Foxconn to explore potential collaborations in electric vehicles, batteries, and electric buses.”

Governor Durazo explained that the company will provide its expertise and technology. In addition to its strategic geographic location, Sonora has the country’s most important deposits of critical minerals required for manufacturing electric vehicles and batteries.

“We have the necessary human talent to drive electric vehicle manufacturing in our state. Currently, 30 young Sonorans are receiving training in Taiwanese universities and at Foxconn itself in the field of electric vehicles,” he said.

The governor also detailed that the agreement includes Foxconn’s evaluation of the potential application of artificial intelligence models in Sonoran cities to improve transportation, public safety, and port infrastructure.

Foxconn President Young Liu stated that Sonora is the consortium’s first international partner in the field of smart cities. “Both Kaohsiung and Guaymas, Sonora, are port citieswith similar development directions. Foxconn will share its experience in smart city collaborations for international export, as seen in Kaohsiung.”

Governor Durazo was accompanied by Francisco Acuña Méndez, Executive President of CODESO, and met with Foxconn President Young Liu and the company’s representative in Mexico, Allen Blue.
