Governor Durazo signs historic agreement with California for regional environmental improvement

In an unprecedented event, the Governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo Montaño, and the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today, establishing the beginning of a strategic collaboration to strengthen the development of renewable energy, electromobility, and sustainability in the region.

This historic agreement, signed in Sacramento, California, establishes a four-year cooperation framework through which the Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan and the California Energy Commission will work to promote leadership by fostering the development of clean energy, strengthening supply chain resilience, and expanding regional access to renewable energy, among other aspects.

“We share a border and challenges with California. Today, we are establishing an agreement with this state, a leader in economic growth and climate action, to join efforts and ensure that families live in a prosperous region with a better environment and technological development. Sonora brings an entire desert and the talent of its people to make a better region possible,” expressed the Governor of Sonora.

Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted the importance of this binational alliance, which will allow Sonora and California to join forces.

“Despite the border that divides us, California and Sonora share the challenge of adapting to a warmer and more arid world. But we also share a common drive to push for real solutions. Today’s alliance brings our states together to clean the air and expand access to more clean energy,” said Governor Newsom.

The Executive President of the Council for Sustainable Development of Sonora (CODESO), Francisco Acuña Méndez, highlighted that with this agreement, the state aligns itself with the world’s leading sustainability leaders, opening new opportunities for industry, education, and investment in renewable energy.
