Sonora government positions Guaymas as Mexico’s strategic port for nearshoring

The Government of Sonora, through the Consejo para el Desarrollo Sostenible (CODESO), held the Guaymas Port Investment Forum: Unlocking Strategic Opportunities at the European Union headquarters in Mexico City, with the goal of presenting Guaymas as the country’s most competitive, sustainable, and forward-looking logistics port in the context of nearshoring.

Organized by the Government of Sonora, the Mexican Navy, and the European Commission, this forum is part of joint efforts to trigger port and logistics development in the Guaymas region, aligned with global nearshoring and sustainability opportunities.

The European Union Ambassador to Mexico, Francisco André, inaugurated the event, which featured participation from Foxconn representatives as well as key national and international actors in the port, logistics, and manufacturing sectors. All agreed that Sonora is ready to become Mexico’s logistics hub, thanks to its upgraded infrastructure, sustainable ecosystem, and strong commitment to green innovation.

Representing Governor Alfonso Durazo, CODESO Executive President Francisco Acuña Méndez emphasized that “Guaymas has been modernized with the support of the Government of Mexico, through the Navy Secretariat, and we are now working on a strategic alliance with the Port of Antwerp to establish a master plan that will make it the country’s first zero-emissions port.”

He presented the Sonora Plan as a platform for a green growth ecosystem, highlighting strategic sectors, clean energy, and investment incentives. He also noted that under Governor Durazo’s leadership, the Sonora Plan is advancing clean energy, electromobility, and the semiconductor industry, providing confidence for international investors.

The Guaymas Port Investment Forum brought together national authorities, European representatives, logistics experts, and investors with the aim of positioning the Port of Guaymas as a net-zero emissions nearshoring hub.

During the forum, Stefan Agne, Minister-Counselor of the EU Delegation to Mexico, underscored the importance of fostering strategic partnerships between Europe and key regions of Mexico in the field of sustainable infrastructure. Vice Admiral Ernesto Bañares Rosete of ASIPONA Guaymas outlined the national port vision and the specific opportunities Guaymas offers in response to new global trade routes.

This first forum served to connect European companies and strategic investors with emerging opportunities in Guaymas. Follow-up actions include a technical visit to Sonora and Guaymas, and the formation of a business alliance focused on net-zero investments.
