Governor Durazo makes history with the Sonora Plan by inaugurating the state’s first public EV charging station

With the inauguration of the first public electric vehicle (EV) charging station in the state and the launch of three electric buses, Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño marks a turning point in Sonora’s transportation system. This initiative is part of the Sonora Plan, which aims to promote a public, sustainable, and modern electromobility system to serve the people of Sonora.

The state’s chief executive emphasized that this new mobility model—backed by an investment of 19.4 million pesos—seeks to decarbonize the economy and harness clean energy to position the state as a leader in sustainable development. The new station features five dual fast chargers, an electrical substation, machine room, offices, restrooms, a security booth, and a canopy to protect vehicles during charging.

“While today we are inaugurating a charging station, it is a historic step in that we are solidifying the path to positioning our state as a leader in energy transition and climate action,” stated the governor.

During the day, the station can charge up to 160 electric cars, which equals around 58,000 vehicles per year and represents a reduction of 138,000 tons of carbon dioxide compared to gasoline-powered cars. At night, the same chargers can supply up to 21 electric buses, eliminating an estimated 2,700 tons of carbon dioxide per year. All of this contributes significantly to environmental protection through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

At the same event, Governor Durazo Montaño also launched three electric buses, with an investment of 14.9 million pesos. These units will operate along the Hospital–University route, connecting downtown Hermosillo with educational institutions such as the Universidad de Sonora, Instituto Tecnologico de Hermosillo (ITH), and Conalep II, as well as the Hospital General, Hospital de Zona 14 IMSS and the Hospital General de Especialidades.

With these actions, the Government of Sonora reaffirms its commitment to the human right to sustainable and modern mobility, a right recognized in the state constitution since 2022.
