The Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan, which promotes economic development, human talent, sustainability, and innovation, is a key pillar for building a highly competitive megaregion with a forward-looking vision, stated Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño during his virtual participation in the Arizona–Sonora Economic Forum.
In this forum, the state leader emphasized the strong partnership and commitment with Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs to transform communities through investment and innovation. He highlighted the importance of strengthening ties between both states, leveraging shared characteristics, and creating new avenues for growth and development in the areas of economy, trade, and industry across the region.
“I believe the area with the greatest opportunity is clean energy generation, in which the state of Sonora has taken a leading role in our country; we could work together in generating clean energy not only for the Mexican market but specifically for the Arizona market,” he emphasized.
Governor Durazo Montaño highlighted that to ensure long-term sustainable economic development, there is significant potential to expand collaboration and integration between both states in areas such as attracting foreign direct investment, developing human talent, transitioning the automotive sector toward electromobility, the semiconductor industry, as well as energy supply and water availability.
He underscored Sonora’s fundamental role in the Mexico Plan, promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum, which aims to position Mexico as one of the world’s ten largest economies by 2030. A key component of achieving this goal is the implementation of a new industrial policy focused on increasing national content in global value chains by 15 percent across the automotive, aerospace, electronics, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, and chemical sectors.
The event was attended by Regina Romero, Mayor of Tucson; Roberto Gradillas Pineda, Sonora’s Secretary of Economy and Tourism; officials from the Mexican Consulate in the United States; as well as members of the business sector.
